Pre-departure
What to pack:
Here the cliché 'less is more' is absolutely true. You will want to pack as little as possible, as it will make your initial trip and any other traveling that you do before or after the program much simpler. Some things you will want to include in your suitcase are:
- Slippers (your floors will be wood or marble and, therefore, chilly, and you don't want to disturb your downstairs neighbors)
- Layered clothing (the best way to keep warm during the cooler months in homes with less-than-stellar heating is to wear layers)
- A warm jacket (gloves, a scarf and a hat are also necessities during the winter)
- 1 nicer outfit (Greeks tend to dress less casually on a day-to-day basis, so you may want to keep this in mind while packing, but there will probably be at least one event during the semester that you will want to dress up for)
- Umbrella
- Artifacts from home to liven up your room-photos, postcards, etc.
Time and weather:
- Greece is 2 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and 7 hours ahead of EST (Eastern Standard Time).
- The weather in Athens in the summer is hot and dry with average temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. The fall and spring are mild with average temperatures of 65 degrees during the day. And the winter is rainy and cool with average temperatures of 50 degrees, though it can, and often does, become colder.
Banking:
We strongly recommend that you use an ATM card while here in Greece. Traveler's cheques are not readily accepted here and exchanging them can be a hassle.
Cell phone providers:
Questions to research before you arrive:
What is the population of Greece?
What type of government does Greece have?
What are the major political parties?
What is the economic base of Greece? What are Greece's major exports?
What are the major football (soccer) teams?
Why are Greeks wary of Tuesdays?
Which Greeks have won the Nobel Prize and why? You can start your search here..
