The Greek Key: Language in a Cultural Landscape

song birds for sale on Odos Athinas You already know that there are several new things to expect in Athens and Greece: a foreign language in a new alphabet, new foods, a new city. But what about the ones you do not anticipate? Things like eye contact and body language, holidays, the way one argues, the rules of hospitality, the importance of coffee in the lives of most Greeks?

The Arcadia Center offers a unique language learning class and cultural immersion seminar. Participation in this combined class will bring you closer to the unanticipated Greek reality in ways that visitors simply cannot do on their own. The Greek Key: Language in a Cultural Landscape is a 6 credit course that combines language learning with an intercultural seminar. Enrollment in both sections of The Greek Key is mandatory.

The Greek Key Seminar

The Greek Key Seminar will allow you to unlock the door to cross cultural understanding. It provides the structure to explore Greek culture in an in-depth way while helping you to acquire new and necessary learning techniques and survival strategies.

  • Earn 2 credits for the Greek Key Seminar
  • The Greek Key Seminar meets every week
  • The Greek Key Seminar will involve you in community-based learning as you volunteer in a local organization or engage in directed field study

Modern Greek Language

Greek language instruction begins intensively during orientation and continues throughout the semester. If you have previous understanding of Greek, the language faculty will work with you in orientation week to place you in the appropriate section.

  • Earn 4 credits for language learning which begins during orientation and continues throughout the semester
  • Greek language classes meet twice a week.
